Sri Dakshinakali (Legend and History)

The Temple Goddess facing west unlike the Dakshineshwar temple – Kolkata. The Main Vigraham I idol (of Sri Dakshinakali) is made of mirror finished pancha-loham which is an alloy of five metals gold, silver, brass, copper, and tin. The face of Dakshinakali is generally portrayed as a beautiful girl rather than a fearsome hag. Mother stands, with her right foot forward (meaning of “dakshina”), upon the corpselike body of her husband, Lord Shiva is formless and absolutely unmoving. In her fury fails to see the body of Shiva, who lies among the corpses on the battlefield and steps on his chest. Realizing Shiva lies beneath her feet, anger was pacified and calms in fury. Kali was ashamed at the prospect of keeping her husband beneath her feet and thus stuck her tongue out of humiliation.

Mother shows her awful aspect in upper left hand holding a blooded sword and lower left hand clutches a freshly severed head. Mother shows her beneficent side in upper right hand as abhaya mudra the hand position which says “Fear not” and lower right hand as dakshina mudra (another reason mother bears the same name) which indicates giving of boons to her children.

About the Founder

Srimath.A.M.Ramamoorthy Swamigal

Our Late Shri.A.M.Ramamoorthy Swamigal was born in the year 1947 in Thiruvarur. He grew up in Thiruvarur District in Tamilnadu. Upon his graduation he owned a school where he worked as the Head Master.

He once visited Dakshineshwar Kali Temple in Kolkata (North India). He was greatly impressed by the way the temple was built and the way she posed for her devotees as a protector rather than Destroyer (As generally Kali means Destroyer).

After coming back, one night Dakshinakali appeared in his dream and suggested him to construct a Dakshinakali Temple for her devotees in South India. Right from the moment he got up from the dream, his only ambition was to build a Temple for Goddess Sri Dakshinakali. He immediately decided to use his Paddy field near Senthamangalam, Thiruvarur which was an under developed area and completed the construction of the temple in the year 1983.

Simultaneously he learned Sanskrit, Vedam from his Guru Late Shri. Annan Swamigal who then later blessed him with deeksha.

Every Fridays Late Shri.AM Ramamoorthy Swamigal sits down in his chamber besides the temple premises for giving Arul Vaaku (believed to be words/solutions/guidance/blessing conveyed by the God herself) for the fellow Devotees. He Aspired a Religious and sacred Life.

Regarding his Personal Life: His wife R.Saroja is now the Trustee of the Temple and has two daughters:Arulmozhidevi & Bhavadharini who helps in the activities of the temple.

He later closed his eyes on 23 Aug 2002.
